Welcome to a very educational two-day course led by the award-winning ceramicist and throwing world champion Nina Bergqvist! In spring 2025, Nina visited the Throwing Workshop for the first time, and we can only say that she is an absolutely incredible woman and an extremely pedagogical teacher. In this course, Nina will teach you to throw even larger and taller pieces using various techniques. Sectional throwing (stabilizing the clay and throwing together different sections) as well as using a heat gun (throwing, heating, building up, and continuing to throw)

Nina Bergqvist made history as the first woman in Sweden to receive a Master’s Certificate in pottery in 2017. The Master’s Certificate is the highest award in craft professions and confirms exceptional professional skills and solid experience. In addition, Nina is a two-time world champion in technical throwing, a discipline where one must throw a cylinder as high as possible and a plate as wide as possible within a time limit. Nina is a highly appreciated teacher at the Form Academy, where she has taught for over 30 years.

The course fee includes:

  • Materials: 6 kg stoneware clay (after that 50 SEK/kg)
  • Coffee/tea, fruit, and snacks
  • Throwing Workshop's fabric bag
  • Opportunity to leave your shoes and clothes during the weekend
  • No firing is included, but you can of course take your item(s) home for your own firing. (However, there is a possibility to purchase bisque firing for an additional cost)

Prerequisites
To benefit from the course content, you need to have throwing experience and be able to center about one kilogram of clay.

Course structure and content:
During the course, Nina will demonstrate important techniques, such as how to center large lumps, achieve significant height in a cylinder, and throw large bowls. You will have plenty of time to practice on your own as well as receive individual guidance to develop your skills and take your throwing to the next level.

This course is perfect for you who have already done some throwing and want to take the next step to work with larger objects. Each participant has their own throwing wheel, and 6 kg of clay per person is included in the price.

The group consists of a maximum of 14 participants.

Sustainable materials

During this course, participants will be able to choose from 4 different stoneware clays with 25% chamotte (0-0.25). Antrachite 116sf, Salt and pepper 31 sf, 11sf lava clay from Witgert, as well as 254 from Georg & Schnider. At the Throwing Workshop, we are very mindful of the environment and work in everything we do according to a sustainability plan. The clays we purchase come as much as possible from Witgert, which has a strong environmental policy.
